The Brain Awareness Week has been organized worldwide since many years. The idea was born in the United States in the late 1990s. Since then, lectures are held every year in March, in which researchers and clinicians explain to the public how brain functions. In Poland, the Brain Awareness Week is an event organized since 1998 on the initiative of the Polish Neuroscience Society and the DANA Foundation.
It is held in Warsaw, Krakow, Lublin and Katowice. Its organization is supported by many institutions, e.g. in Warsaw: Nencki Institute of Experimental Medicine, PAN and M. Mossakowski Institute of Experimental Medicine, PAN; in Krakow: Polish Copernicus Society of Naturalists, Jagiellonian University and Institute of Pharmacology, PAN; in Katowice: University of Silesia; in Poznań: Division of PAN, Institute of Human Genetics, PAN, Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, PAN, Poznań University of Medical Sciences and Poznań University of Life Sciences. Lecturers are invited from among distinguished experts in neurobiology, neurology, psychiatry, neuropsychology, neuropharmacology, neurophysics and neuroinformatics. Lectures are open to the public and are intended for all who are interested in issues related to the nervous system research and the newest achievements in this field.
